Do You Need a DOT Physical Exam?

In Florida, a DOT physical exam is mandatory in order to:

Obtain a New CDL

This applies to anyone applying for a new Commercial Driver's License, regardless of driving within Florida (intrastate) or across state lines (interstate).

Renew Your CDL

Existing CDL holders in Florida need a DOT physical to renew their license, for both intrastate and interstate driving.

Recertify for Medical Conditions

Drivers with specific medical conditions might require recertification by a DOT-approved medical examiner.

Why Are DOT Physical Exams Required?

The DOT prioritizes safety on the roads. Physical exams ensure CDL drivers meet specific health standards to minimize accidents caused by some medical conditions.

Enhanced Safety

The exam ensures you're physically fit to operate large commercial vehicles, reducing the risk of accidents.

Focus and Endurance

The exam assesses your ability to handle long hours, maintain focus, and react quickly while driving.

Sharp Vision and Hearing

The exam evaluates your vision (including color perception and peripheral vision) and hearing to ensure you can detect potential hazards on the road.

Monitor Medical Conditions

The exam screens for medical conditions that could impair driving and determines if they are under control for safe driving.

What to Expect During Your DOT Physical Exam

A Florida DOT physical exam is designed to assess your overall health and fitness to operate a commercial motor vehicle (CMV) safely. Here's what you can expect during the exam

Medical History Review

Dr. Nazario will discuss your medical history, including any past or present medical conditions, surgeries, medications you're taking, and allergies. Be prepared to answer questions openly and honestly.

Physical Examination

Dr. Nazario will perform a general physical examination, checking your blood pressure, heart rate, height and weight.

  • Your vision will be tested for distance acuity, color perception, and peripheral vision.
  • Your hearing will be tested to ensure you can detect a whispered voice.
  • Dr. Nazario will do a general examination for any issues that might impact driving ability.
  • Your reflexes, strength, and coordination will be assessed.
  • Your range of motion in your neck, back, and limbs will be checked.

Urinalysis

  • A urine sample will be collected to check for potential health problems like diabetes or kidney disease.

Additional Tests (if needed)

  • Depending on your medical history or the doctor's findings, additional tests like blood sugar testing or an electrocardiogram (ECG) might be ordered to get a more complete picture of your health.

Overall Assessment

  • Based on the information gathered during the exam, Dr. Nazario will determine if you meet the DOT physical health standards for operating a CMV.
  • If you pass the exam, you will receive a medical examiner's certificate valid for up to two years.
  • If you don't pass, Dr. Nazario will explain the reason and may recommend you address any health concerns before retaking the exam.

Some additional things to keep in mind:

  • Bring a list of medications: It's helpful to bring a list of all medications you're currently taking, including dosages.
  • Bring any test or letter from specialists: if you have a chronic medical condition.
  • Allow enough time: While the exam itself may take 30-45 minutes, plan to spend some extra time for paperwork and discussion with Dr. Nazario.
